In November 2005 HP introduced their Color LaserJet 3800 printers as replacements for their 3700 series. The 3800 was OEM rated at print speeds of up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) in both black and color with monthly duty cycles of 65,000 pages.

In June 2007 the CP3505 was introduced as a replacement for the 3800 models, with the same print speeds but higher print resolutions, and at a lower initial price.

The 3800 and CP3505 use the same 6,000 page yield (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) supplies set. All cartridges require color-specific chips for correct printer operation.
